Preparing for Thursday’s snowstorm

Snow will be a heavy/wet snow, making shoveling difficult

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Much of western Massachusetts is under a Winter Storm Warning beginning Thursday morning.

Wednesday morning, residents were stocking up on winter weather supplies at Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Springfield ahead of the storm.

“I’m looking for some parts for my snow blower,” Springfield resident Jorge Colon said. “I hope it doesn’t come down the way they say it will, but if it does, I want to be ready. It does help me a lot because I’ve got a lot of sidewalks to do.”

Plowable snow expected Thursday

The snow is expected to start falling after 9:00 a.m. Thursday, and could last past midnight, into the early hours of Friday. More than six inches of snow is expected to fall in parts of western Massachusetts, though some areas are expected to see less accumulation due to the possibility of a snow-rain mixture.

“They’re predicting quite a bit, so I’m just trying to be ready for it,” Marilyn Nicewicz of Springfield said. “I’m making sure I have the proper product, so with the snow and ice coming I don’t want to just get rock salt. I want to make sure I get the stuff that has the calcium also so that way everything will be melted great.”

Some communities have already issued parking bans in preparation for the storm. Click here to view our list of parking bans around western Massachusetts.
