SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Jewish Community Center is home to western Massachusetts’ largest menorah.
The outdoor menorah was set up Monday morning while children from Heritage Academy and the JCC’s Early Learning Center gathered and sang Hanukkah songs.
Hanukkah, sometimes referred to as the Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. A candle is lit and placed in the menorah each night over the span of eight nights to commemorate the “miracle of oil.”
The JCC has invited the public to several events in celebration of Hanukkah this year, which begins Saturday and ends January 1.
“The annual Hanukkah Festival activities provides great opportunities for the entire community to come together to celebrate, assist those in need, and help make the world a better place,” said Michael Paysnick, Executive Director of the JCC. “There is something for everyone and we look forward to welcoming all at one or more of the planned events.”
