Super Saturday sets out to be busier than Black Friday

Sales nationwide are expected to top $15-billion

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – If you thought Black Friday was the busiest shopping day of the year, think again. In the retail world they call it Super Saturday. The last Saturday before Christmas. Since next Saturday is Christmas Eve, they’re considering it the 17th.

The malls are expected to be packed with shoppers who’ve waited until the last minute. Sales nationwide are expected to top $15-billion. At the Eastfield Mall in Springfield Friday, 22News found the parking lot about half full, but inside, plenty of mall-goers with bags in hand ready for wrapping.

Therese Michalczyk of Springfield said, “I am shopping for the boyfriend and last minute shopping for the kids and their stocking stuffers. It seemed like a nice day, it was cold out. I didn’t think the mall would be very busy.”

Nicole Brace of Springfield said, “We’ve been doing this going on two months now. Trying to hit every store that we can, wherever there are sales.”

This year, retail stores are seeing the profits slip as more and more consumers shop online, but there’s still plenty of procrastinating shoppers who like the mall atmosphere and take advantage of the things like gift wrapping stations.
