SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – With snow moving in, people stocked up on their winter supplies. Rocky’s Ace Hardware in South Hadley said everyone should have ice melt, but make sure you pick a brand that uses calcium chloride or magnesium chloride.
Though less expensive, rock salts could cost you more in the long run. “That’s going to breakdown your pavements, your driveways, which is going to bring you back to us, to repair your sidewalks and driveways,” said Rocky’s employee Dawn Bartolucci.
She said rock salts can also hurt your plants, and your pets. Jim Wage of South Hadley said, “We walk a lot and as soon as he steps out on some of the rock salt, it gets in his paws, and he just does not want to walk anymore.”
Wage said he sticks with sand to avoid all of the chemicals.
Rocky’s also recommends drivers have an ice scraper, and even a mini shovel, to help them dig out in case they get stuck.
