Homeless shelters filled to capacity during frigid nights

Springfield Police ensured homeless were not stuck out in the cold

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thursday night’s bitter cold kept more homeless people indoors at Springfield’s shelters.

The Homeless shelters administered by the Friends of the Homeless and the Springfield Rescue Mission were filled to overflowing.

Rescue Mission Chaplain Miguel Cabrela told 22News that instead of the normal 35 to 40 people who spend the night, 50 homeless individuals came to the Taylor Street shelter Thursday night.

“People that used to stay outside, they come inside to the shelter. We made sure that nobody is outside under these circumstances, we don’t deny shelter to anyone,” Carbrela said.

Cabrela told 22News that during those incredibly cold nights, Springfield police officers will help make certain that any homeless people on the street will spend the night at one of the shelters.
