Westfield City Council approves new smoking ban

Classes to quit smoking will be offered to city employees

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Westfield City Council unanimously approved a new smoking ban, 13-0, during Thursday night’s meeting.

City Councilor Ralph Figy told 22News the ordinance will ban smoking on any city owned or leased properties. He said the ordinance will go into effect by the end of the year, as details on enforcement and other issues are finalized.

“I don’t think we’re going to have the cigarette police running around writing tickets, but it just gives them an opportunity; the health department, the building department, and the police department you have three enforcement agencies on this,” said Figy.

Figy said classes to quit smoking will be offered to city employees and senior citizens.
