1 worker dead, 1 rescued during water tank inspection mishap in Massachusetts

BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) — Officials say equipment failure may be to blame for the death of a diver who reported losing air while inspecting a massive, municipal water tank in Braintree.

A Kentucky-based business was performing the inspection Thursday when officials say the man became trapped inside. A spotter jumped in to help, but later had to be pulled out of the large, cylindrical tank by rescue crews. He has been taken to a hospital.

Crews were not able to reach the first man. Authorities were draining the 1-million-gallon tank to recover his body.

Officials say the dead man’s 14 year-old son was at the scene, but the town hasn’t confirmed whether the man was related to any other workers.

Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan says “perhaps some of the equipment may have failed.”
