SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A portion of I-91 South in Springfield will be closed overnight Wednesday.
MassDOT will close the left lane of I-91 South and Exit 1A from I-291 West to I-91 South from 8:00 p.m. Wednesday to 5:00 a.m. Thursday. A sign will be in place for the following detour:
- Take Exit 2B on I-291 West and follow signs for Dwight Street. Turn left on Dwight Street, then turn right on State Street. Turn left on West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue, and bear left after crossing Union Street, to merge onto I-91 South.
Shortly after, from 10:00 p.m. Wednesday to 5:00 a.m. Thursday, MassDOT will close I-91 South at Temporary Exit 7-6. Signs will be in place for the following detours:
- To continue to I-91 South: Take temporary Exit 7-6 and merge onto West Columbus Avenue. Continue south onto East Columbus Avenue through the rail underpass. Bear right onto West Columbus Avenue behind the I-91 North Garage. Continue onto Hall of Fame Avenue. After passing Union Street, use the left lane to merge onto the on-ramp to I-91 South.
- For downtown destinations: Take temporary Exit 7-6 and merge onto West Columbus Avenue. Turn left onto Boland Way.
These closures will allow crews to conduct barrier work and paint pavement markings in preparation for Stage 2 of the I-91 Rehabilitation Project. Southbound traffic will have access to the newly-reconstructed center lanes once I-91 reopens Thursday morning. Traffic on I-91 North was shifted last month for Stage 2.
MassDOT says drivers can expect intermittent single lane closures on East and West Columbus Avenues throughout the month of December.
