More detours, ramp closures and traffic shifts coming to I-91

The entire project should be complete by January of 2019

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Starting next week, this temporary Exit 7-6, that allows drivers access to downtown Springfield, will be closed while crews prepare for Phase 2 of the Interstate 91 reconstruction.

Drivers can expect more detours and delays on I-91. As Phase 2 continues, drivers on the southbound side will shift from the outer lanes to the newly reconstructed center lanes.

Randy Wessels of Ware told 22News, “It’s going to be a lot more interesting, especially if they close from the I-291, for heading home. It’s a cluster sometimes just trying to get on the highway.”

Continuing Coverage: I-91 Reconstruction

Next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m., MassDOT will close Exit 1A from I-291 west to I-91 south and the temporary Exit 7-6 on the southbound side. The closure is so crews can move barriers and mark lanes. Both exits will reopen at 5:00 a.m. Thursday.

Ramps that were closed in Phase 1, like Union Street on-ramp to I-91 north, will remain closed during Phase 2. On the northbound side, Exits 6-7 will remain closed until the end of the year. Exit 9 will remain closed until spring 2018.

The entire project should be complete by January of 2019.
