St. Mary’s Church in Northampton could soon be up for sale

Proceeds from the sale would go towards projects in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The St. Mary’s Church has been dark since it closed in 2010, and Mark DuPont, spokesperson with the Diocese of Springfield, told 22News it could mean a new parish center being built in Northampton.

DuPont said the Elm Street property is in the final stages of being put up for sale, pending approval from the realty committee and the Bishop. Residents told 22News if the property is sold, they would be sad to see it change.

“I think it would be nice if they could use the space inside for something functional, like something they need, but they keep the exterior. I think that would be probably the best solution,” said Elissa Na of Northampton.

DuPont said the parish has expressed interest in building a new parish center and offices in Northampton, and he believes some of the proceeds from the sale of St. Mary’s would go towards the project.
