Pedestrian struck by train in Amherst; rushed to hospital

Victim was alert and breathing following accident, fire chief says

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – A pedestrian was struck by a train in Amherst at around 1:00 Wednesday afternoon.

According to an Amherst Police news release sent to 22News, the victim, a 40 year-old man from Amherst, was struck by the train near High Street. He was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, for what police are calling “significant injuries.”

The Amherst Police Department and officials from the railroad are looking into what caused the accident.

Our 22News crew in Amherst observed that the freight train that struck the pedestrian was carrying wood.
