OXON HILL, Md. (WWLP) – Close to two years ahead of MGM Springfield’s grand opening, another MGM casino is opening its doors in Maryland. Just 11 miles from Washington, D.C. MGM National Harbor will hold its grand opening Thursday night.

Continuing Coverage: MGM Springfield casino project

Over the next couple of days, 22News will give you a look inside this $1.4 billion casino. There are lots of similarities between it and the one that is currently being built in Springfield, including the number of people being employed and the size of the casino floor.

Still, there are some big difference between the two projects. MGM Springfield could in some ways be seen as a scaled-down version of MGM National Harbor. The Maryland resort contains retail space, restaurants, a movie theater, and a hotel over a 23-acre site. MGM Springfield will feature the same amenities, but on a site that is only about 14 acres in size.

MGM National Harbor is expected to bring in about 3,800 jobs to Maryland, with MGM Springfield expected to bring about 3,000 jobs to western Massachusetts.

Residents in Prince Georges County, where MGM National Harbor is located, do share similar concerns to their Springfield counterparts about the increased traffic that the casino will bring to the area. Opening night alone is expected to bring in more than 20,000 people.
