Crews searching for Marine pilot who ejected from fighter jet near Japan

The pilot was flying a training mission

IWAKUNI, Japan (WAVY) — A search and rescue effort is underway after a Marine pilot ejected off the coast of Japan.

In a news release issued Wednesday, Marine officials said the pilot ejected Tuesday night from a F/A-18 120 miles southeast of Iwakuni, Japan.

The fighter was assigned to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Okinawa, Japan.

Officials say the pilot was conducting a training exercise when a mishap occurred. The incident is under investigation.
