SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Stage 2 of the Interstate 91 Reconstruction Project is underway, and expected to last until the Spring of 2018.
The southbound side of the highway, however, remains in Stage 1B. It is expected to enter Stage 2 earlier this month.
In the first stage, the center lanes were closed for construction, while we drove on the outer lanes. On I-91 North, traffic has shifted to the new center lanes, while the outer lanes are replaced. That has not yet happened on I-91 South, but it will soon be going on there as well.
Drivers are getting sick of the additional traffic that the past year of lane shifts has caused.
“It’s ridiculous, you know, it’s causing a lot of accidents, but hopefully they’ll get through it, they’ll make the roads better, and then it will just be way better,” said Jorge Alicea, who drives on I-91 between Hartford and Springfield.
MassDOT is holding a public information meeting on Tuesday night at 6:00 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
