AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – A flag-covered convoy paid its respect Sunday to the Stars and Stripes and all it represents.
The convoy took off from the Whatley Diner, rolling down Route 116, which would take them past the University of Massachusetts, Amherst College, and then proceed further past Hampshire College, where hundreds of veterans one week ago protested the removal of the American flag from the campus. The college raised the flag again a few days ago.
The veterans group largely responsible for last Sunday’s protest cancelled its flag celebration for Sunday. Members of the American flag and Thin Blue Line convoy felt they should be heard.
Jonnathan Rawls told 22News, “The only reason was just cared about our flag and respecting it.”
Blake Griswold of Granby said. “Just here to show my support to the people who fought and died to protect our flag. I don’t think it’s right taking down the flag and burning it, I just want to show my support.”
Police cruisers accompanied the flag covered convoy through its Route 116 destination; a rolling demonstration without incident that its organizers say met all of its objectives.
