How to show holiday cheer, without spending too much

LED lights use about 10% of the electricity that incandescent lights use

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Tis’ the season for holiday decorations, but how do you show holiday cheer, without spending too much? 22News discovered how you can save money and energy on the right lights.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The holiday season is here and decorations are everywhere, but how do you stay in the holiday spirit, without spending too much.

“My recommendation is when you shopping for lights, it’s all about picking between incandescent and LED, but what’s the difference,” said Michelle Braden from Rocky’s Hardware store in Agawam.

LED lights use about 10% of the electricity that incandescent lights use. “They also produce less heat and less energy, so its going to help you save on your electrical bill, as well as the worry outside, so with LED you don’t have to worry about that,” said Braden. LED lights are 3x more expensive than incandescent lights are. Rocky’s hardware told 22News, you’ll save up to 90% on your bill by using them, but not everyone is a fan of LED lights.

Jim McGough, of South Hadley said “There’s a difference brightness to them and you know, whatever, it’s old fashion thinking.”

Incandescent lights have warmer lighting, while LED lights have bold colorful brightness and they last two to three times longer. To save more money and energy. Turn off room lights when the tree is lit. Not only will it save you money, it will create a festive atmosphere.

Use a programmable timer for lights to ensure they aren’t accidentally left on. Never run extension cords under rugs or coil them tightly around themselves, which can cause them to overheat.

Rocky’s Hardware store told 22News, there’s a big difference between outdoor extension cords and indoor.
