CUBA (WWLP) – Fidel Castro’s ashes arrived Saturday in Santiago, Cuba, where they were driven around the city as people lined the streets.

The cortège with the former Cuban leader’s ashes arrived in the city where they will be interred on Sunday.

A small Cuban flag covered his remains on a flower-bedecked trailer. It was pulled by a green military vehicle for the more than 500 mile procession from Havana.

Castro’s ashes will be taken to a cemetery to rest alongside the remains of national hero José Marti.

Sunday’s interment will end a 9 day period of mourning in Cuba.

The procession of his ashes was on a route tracing in reverse the victory tour Castro and his rebels took after overthrowing government forces in 1959.
