CHINA (WWLP) – A coal mine explosion in northern China killed 17 people Saturday. 10 others are trapped.

31 miners were working underground in the mine when the explosion happened. 4 were rescued after the blast, and a search and rescue operation began for those who are trapped.

It’s not clear what caused the disaster.

China’s mining industry has long been among the world’s deadliest. Top work safety regulators have acknowledged that some mines cut corners on safety standards due to financial pressure.
