Veterans plan celebration instead of protest at Hampshire College

The celebration will be held on Sunday from Noon to 3:00 p.m.

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Hampshire College decided to once again fly the American flag. Veterans consider Friday’s flag raising as a huge victory. Now, instead of a planned protest for this Sunday, they’re planning a celebration instead.

Last Sunday, veterans protested by calling on the college to fly the American flag. The second “Raise Our Flag” rally that was scheduled for this upcoming Sunday, will now be turned into a celebration.

22News spoke with local veterans who said they still want to come together to thank the community for supporting their efforts. Brian Belanger of Chicopee said, “Yes, we plan on going up there for the rally this weekend, we would have been up there every single weekend if it takes it to put the American flag back up.”

According to the event’s Facebook page, the celebration will include the singing of the national anthem, a pilot flyover, and various performances and speeches. It’ll be held at Hampshire College from Noon to 3:00 p.m.
