Friendly’s closing Chicopee distribution center, dozens to lose jobs

Friendly's will be partnering with a third-party distributor

Friendly's Support and Distribution Center on Sheridan Street in Chicopee will be closing in early 2017.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Dozens of employees from the Friendly’s distribution center in Chicopee will soon be out of a job.

Maura Tobias of Friendly’s Restaurants told 22News that the layoffs at the company’s Sheridan Street distribution center are a result of their new partnership with third-party distributor US Foods, which will take over their restaurant distribution in February. The new partnership will allow more flexible distribution options.

Tobias said that less than 50 employees will lose their jobs as a result.

She also said Friendly’s is actively working to place as many employees that want to stay within the company.  They plan on holding upcoming job fairs with US Foods, Dean Foods, and will also place employees in restaurants if they’d like.  Friendly’s has also reached out to other businesses in the community to place them.

She released the following statement to 22News:

“FIC Restaurants (Friendly’s) has made the decision to partner with US Foods for restaurant distribution services beginning in February 2017. This partnership allows for more flexible distribution options and services as we focus on opening new restaurants, both company and franchise.  While this move will align Friendly’s distribution services with preferred distribution practices in the restaurant industry, we are providing transition services and working with US Foods and others to provide job fairs to assist Distribution Team Members in finding new opportunities.”
