South Hadley Police: 3 arrested, 1 hospitalized after shooting

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – Three men have been arrested after a Saturday afternoon shooting in South Hadley.

According to a release sent to 22News from South Hadley Police Chief Steve Parentela, the shooting followed a 4:00 p.m. confrontation in an apartment at 554 Amherst Road. The 29-year-old man who lived in the apartment was shot in the abdomen and was brought to the Holyoke Medical Center by two friends before being transported to Baystate Medical Center. He is listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Police have arrested 30-year-old Dupree Hinds of Chicopee, 18-year-old Joseph Massa of Chester, and 19-year-old Robert Vanhoy of South Hadley in connection with the shooting.

Parentela said evidence suggests the shooting was a targeted act of violence against the victim and was not random. Police are still investigating the incident.

All three men are being charged with:

  • Home invasion
  • Assault with intent to rob
  • Use of firearm when committing a felony
  • Carrying a firearm without a license
  • Possession of a firearm/ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card
  • Assault and Battery by discharge of a firearm

Hinds is also being charged with firearm violation with three prior violent/drug crimes.

The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned in Eastern Hampshire District Court.
