Springfield Mayor set to speak with Hampshire College President

Mayor Sarno hopes that the college can host a Veterans' appreciation day in the future

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno attended Sunday’s protest at Hampshire College, urging the college to raise their American flag again.

On Friday, Mayor Sarno has a call scheduled with Hampshire College President Jonathan Lash. Mayor Sarno told 22News he is very passionate about the American flag because his parents survived World War II and the support he has for the family of fallen marine Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan.

“I just want to be able to let the Hampshire College family know, from President Lash and the board of trustees and students, okay you have the right but that right was given to you by veterans,” said Mayor Sarno.

Sarno hopes that the college can host a Veterans’ appreciation day in the future and a formal discussion between veterans and members of the campus.

Mayor Sarno also told 22News if the flag goes back up before his call, he will commend President Lash.
