Local students show support for charter school in Westfield

The proposed school would service nearly 600 students

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Residents in Westfield had a strong reaction Thursday night to a possible charter school in their city.

A public hearing was held at Westfield State University on the proposed Hampden Charter School of Science. The school is in the final application process along with four other potential charter schools across the state.

Students from local charter schools shared their support for opening a school in Westfield at the Thursday’s hearing, but some residents were strongly opposed to the idea.

Raymond Paquette told 22News, “Maybe in a small form, there can be charter schools for specific needs, but we need to invest in public schools, that’s what we need to make schools good.”

The proposed school would service nearly 600 students from Holyoke, Agawam, and West Springfield.
