Thousands of jelly-like creatures wash ashore

Some speculate it's a lingering effect of last winter's El Niño

(CNN) – Some people in southern California are calling strange creatures washing up on shore, “jellyfish,” “balloons,” even “aliens.” Thousands of them have been washing ashore in Huntington Beach, California.

CNN talked with beachgoers about what they saw and with a marine biologist who thinks he knows what the creatures are.

In addition to these creatures, a number of stingrays have been spotted uncommonly close to shore. Some speculate it’s a lingering effect of last winter’s El Niño.
