Northampton gears up for First Night “New Years” celebration

They'll be dozens of events and performers for First Night

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – For the last 32 years Northampton has put on their First Night event, celebrating the New Year and it continues to grow. Now the city is asking for your help to ensure the event is a success.

It’s one of the biggest nights of the year. Northampton’s First Night, attracts thousands of people from all over western Massachusetts. It’s a 12-hour event featuring music and live entertainment… which means it requires a lot of planning and hundreds of volunteers.

Rachel Stevens, the President of the Center Of The Arts Board said “So you have to have to the right kind of size for each performance, and trying to figure out how many people are going to be there. How many people are going to want to see each performance, and which venue is right for them. It’s an amazing balance act.”

They’ll be dozens of events and performers for First Night. You can even catch Downtown Sounds owner Joe Blumenthal, performing with 2 separate groups.

Joseph Blumenthal, of Downtown Sounds in Northampton said “There’s an amazing amount of talent in this valley and you get to see a lot of that talent all in one place at one ticket price.”

It costs $16 for admission all day and night if you buy it ahead of New Year’s Eve. It takes more than one thousand hours of preparation to make the event a success.
