State House tree lighting ceremony honors Gold Star Families

Photos and messages from families of local service members were on display

BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Governor Charlie Baker and the First Lady joined military families for a tree lighting Tuesday.

The State House tree lighting ceremony is dedicated to Massachusetts Gold Star Families who’ve lost an immediate family member serving overseas. More than one hundred people packed Memorial Hall for the event.

Governor Charlie Baker and First Lady Lauren Baker helped decorate the tree Tuesday afternoon. On display were photos and messages from the families of local service members who’ve died serving their country.

Governor Charlie Baker told 22News: “You are willing to put someone in your family in harm’s way on behalf of the rest of us. You are, in some respects, our greatest treasure and our greatest asset.”

Governor Baker praised these Gold Star Families, saying the event is a way to show the state is willing to help veterans and their spouses. He has also said in the past that Massachusetts leads the nation in providing benefits for veterans and their families.
