SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Police are warning of thieves who may be looking to steal your holiday gifts in your car. About $1.3-billion in personal items are stolen from vehicles each year.

These car burglaries can happen anywhere, but there are some simple steps you can take to protect your packages. The National Insurance Crime Bureau recommends always locking the car and taking the keys with you whenever you leave the car.

Don’t leave presents out in the open, always put them in your trunk. If you have a vehicle without a trunk, like an SUV, make sure to have all valuables covered.

Lawrence Pouliot of Chicopee told 22News, “I make sure it’s covered in the back so nobody sees anything when they look in my truck, and I make sure the door is locked. Today you have to be careful.”

40 to 50 percent of thefts happen just because the driver left the keys in the car. The National Insurance Crime Bureau also says never to leave your vehicle alone anywhere while it’s still running.
