EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Picking the right Christmas lights will help keep your electric bill down. But don’t skimp on supplies when it comes to safety.
With Thanksgiving behind us, many people are already on to the next holiday. That means picking out a Christmas tree and putting up holiday lights outside.
22News went to Rocky’s Ace Hardware in East Longmeadow to find out ways to save a couple bucks on your lighting displays. John Guido, from Rocky’s Ace Hardware, said, “You’ll definitely go with the LED lights you’ll save a lot more, it uses a lot less wattage and produces the lumens that a regular light bulb would produce.”
Another way to save money, don’t go for the “blinking” lights. As the lights blink on and off, they are burning more electricity.
If you do put holiday lights outside make sure you are getting the outdoor extension cord and not the indoor cord. Keep the cords away from gutters especially when it rains or snows. Also, secure your lights with insulated or plastic holders, never use tacks or nails.
Depending on how many decorations and lights you have outside, try not to over load your extension cord to reduce the risk of a fire starting.
