SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Now that Phase 1 of the I-91 Rehabilitation Project has been completed, drivers will now have to plan around Phase 2.

During Phase 2, traffic on the I-91 viaduct is being shifted from the outer lanes to the newly-constructed inner lanes. These new northbound lanes opened to drivers just after 5:00 A.M. Monday morning. Traffic on I-91 South is not expected to shift to the newly-reconstructed inner lanes until mid-December.

Crews will work on rebuilding the outer lanes of the elevated portion of the highway during Phase 2, after spending the last year working on the inner lanes.

Exit 9 has been closed since Sunday night as part of Phase 2, and will remain closed through spring of 2018.

The following detours will be in place:

  • For Route 20 West (towards West Springfield): Take Exit 10 for Main Street/Route 116. Take a sharp right onto Main Street/Route 116 and turn right onto Bradford Street. Continue onto Plainfield Street/Route 20.
  • For Route 20A East: Take Exit 10 for Main Street/Route 116. Take a sharp right onto Main Street/Route 116 and turn left onto Carew Street/Route 20A East.

MassDOT is advising drivers to plan for additional time through these areas after changes take place.
