New closures in Phase 2 of the I-91 reconstruction project

The entire I-91 project is expected to be complete by January 2019

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – We’re one step closer to the completion of the I-91 reconstruction project. Phase 2 is underway and that means some changes for drivers.

“It was fine how everybody was driving on it and now everybody is beeping at each other and crashing and stuff like that, said Sophia Rivera of Springfield. “It’s harder now.”

Drivers using 91-North are now driving on the newly paved center lanes, while MassDOT works to reconstruct the outer lanes. On this portion of the highway, drivers heading north in the right lane will now have to merge into the middle lane to get through this construction.

“It doesn’t seem like anyone knows what quite to do there’s merging into one lane and hopefully it clears up, but what I’ve been seeing its been a little bit of a hassle,” said Chris Wayte of Agawam.

MassDOT said by mid-December, drivers on the southbound side will shift to the new center lanes as well. The shift will happen near the I-291 ramp, an area drivers say is known for back-ups.

“People will wait to the last minute to merge so then you have everybody trying to cut you off when they see two miles ahead of time they’re supposed to merge,” said Tiara Seward of Springfield.

The entire I-91 project is expected to be complete by January 2019. Exit 9 on I-91 North is also now closed and will stay closed until spring 2018.
