RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — From being prepared at home, to being prepared on the road: Do you have an emergency kit in your car?
There are some essentials to keep inside your vehicle this winter to make sure you are safe in the event of an emergency.
Making sure that your car is ready for winter is always a good idea, but in the unlikely event that you get in a car accident, run off the side of the road, or maybe even break down — you want to make sure that you have everything you need in your car to stay safe and keep yourself out of trouble.
Jumper cables: They give you a boost when you need it and can help you year-round.
Hand warmers: If you’re on a road trip and you get off the road, you want to make sure that you stay warm.
Road flares: Just what you need, especially when it’s dark out. But even during the snow, visibility can be really low — so road flares are a great idea.
Blanket: You never know how long you may be waiting for a tow truck or police to arrive.
Extra jacket: One should always make sure they’re wearing a jacket, but an extra one is always a good idea too.
Small shovel: This could make a big difference in a snow storm if you get stuck.
Extra batteries and flashlight: These will help if you need to make any repairs to your car.
Kitty litter: This is a good idea to keep traction, especially if you get stuck if you get off the road. Katie Dupree says she knows it’s a little weird to keep in your trunk, but it’s definitely helpful.
Scraper: This is usually a given in the winter. In fact, you probably have one in your car right now.
Cell phone charger: Probably one of the most important things to make sure you have. If you’re stranded on the road, a phone charger is exactly what you need.
