Pivoting toward 2018, Massachusetts Dems eye Baker challenge

GOP leaders say Baker would have a strong record to run on

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Democrats didn’t wait for the dust to settle from a tumultuous national election before pivoting toward 2018, when the party’s top priorities will include reclaiming the governor’s office from Republican Charlie Baker.

The Democratic State Committee quickly tapped veteran political operative Gus Bickford to serve as party chairman, succeeding state Sen. Thomas McGee.

GOP leaders say Baker would have a strong record to run on, including his efforts to reform the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

Bickford says the governor’s record isn’t so stellar in key areas and notes that voters rejected a proposal to expand charter schools that Baker strongly supported.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren will also be up for re-election and could be challenged by former Boston Red Sox star Curt Schilling, an outspoken supporter of President-elect Donald Trump.
