SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The second phase of the I-91 reconstruction project has officially begun.
Construction crews will start the process of phase 2 construction beginning at 6 Sunday night, which could cause some delays on the road.
During phase 2 construction crews will be rebuilding the outer lanes of the elevated part of I-91 in Springfield, along the on ramp to I-291. This means they will now reopen the middle lanes of the highways as the outer lanes will be closed during this phase of construction.
MassDOT will be closing I-91 North at exit 6 this Sunday from 9PM to 5AM on Monday morning, this will allow crews pave the roadway, and conduct barrier work. The ramps closed in stage 1b will remain closed during stage 2.
Signs will be put into place to hep drivers follow detour routes. Also happening on Sunday, MassDOT will close exit 9 at 9 Sunday night, this exit closure will remain in effect through spring 2018.
The entire project should be completed by January 2019.
