Springfield police teach kids how to ice skate at annual “Learn to Skate” event

This year marks the 20th anniversary for "Learn to Skate"

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Police taught more than 90 kids how to ice skate during their annual “Learn to Skate” event Saturday.

Nearly 100 kids strapped on their skates and joined the officers at the Cyr Ice Arena in Springfield. Skate rentals were free, and kids were taught the importance of putting on their helmets before getting on the ice.

Springfield Police Captain Cheryl Clapprood told 22News it’s important for kids to see officers outside of their uniforms. She said, “Out here they can see how regular we are, and they need us to standup, so if they’re counting on us for little things like that, and they get to know us, it builds a really nice relationship.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary for “Learn to Skate.” Police have taught thousands of inner city kids how to skate.

If you missed Saturday’s skating lesson, it’s not too late. Skating lessons will take place every Saturday at Cyr Arena from 3:00-4:00pm.
