Western Mass. celebrating Small Business Saturday

The day was launched by American Express in 2010.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts is celebrating Small business Saturday and local businesses are gearing up for their annual shopping event.

American Express first launched the holiday in 2010. Last year, Forbes estimated about 95 million shoppers across the country spent $16 billion dollars on the Saturday after thanksgiving.

The owner of the Jewelry Exchange George Sarkis in Springfield told 22News, he’s anticipating an increase in holiday shoppers.

“People want to get their loved ones something beautiful and we’re going to thrive and do our best to make these girls happy,” said Sarkis.

The Jewelry Exchange has been around for more than 30 years. The owner told 22News, community support is what has kept his business thriving.
