NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – What you buy today, you may need to return tomorrow! The day after Black Friday is one of the busiest days of the year for returns, and there are ways to get your money back hassle-free.

If a return policy isn’t printed on your receipt, a store is required to post it near the cash register. You should keep your receipts in good condition, and save them all in one place.

Some stores give you the option of an e-mailed receipt. You should also ask whether the store charges a restocking fee.

If you are making a purchase for someone else, ask for a gift receipt that does not show the itemized price of your purchases.

Tim Lane of Oakland, California told 22News that he is always careful to know what he is getting into when he makes a purchase.

“As a consumer, you should always be aware of what the return policy is and you should make sure that you are not being taken advantage of,” Lane said.

Return policies vary, so it’s a good idea to always pay with a credit card or a debit card. That way, if you lose the receipt, stores can look up an electronic record of the purchase, or you can dispute the charge if there is an issue.

Shoppers should also know that if a store allows you to return an item after 90 days of its purchase, state law prevents you from getting your sales tax refunded.
