25th anniversary of the Parade of the Big Balloons

Parade route runs along Main Street from Lyman to Locust

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Friday’s 25th edition of Springfield’s Parade of the Big Balloons may have been the biggest and best ever.

The thousands who came to cheer the majesty of the big balloons say they come every year for their children and for themselves. Maria Aponte moved to Springfield five years ago. She has been an enthusiastic parade-goer ever since.

“It’s beautiful, I love it,” Aponte said. “It’s an experience, it’s beautiful, I love Springfield.”

Of all the balloons paraded through Main Street, the Cat in the Hat seems to remain the sentimental favorite.

The Parade of the Big Balloons is a special occasion for Ed Cyran of Agawam and his family.

“We came back for the balloons, my son loves the balloons we’ve been bringing him since he was born. We also love to thank the police officers for all they do to protect us down here, and for the other military to come down,” Cyran said.

This Year’s parade marshal was Chief Master Sergeant Maryann Walts of the 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base. The crowd greeted her enthusiastically.

The Parade of the Big Balloons never fails to excite the thousand of families who line Main Street all the way through Downtown and the South End.
