SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Phase 2 of the I-91 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to begin Sunday night.
With the phase change will come a traffic shift and a long-term closure of Exit 9 on I-91 North.
Starting Sunday at 6:00 P.M., northbound traffic will be shifted from the outer lanes to the newly reconstructed inner lanes. MassDOT is scheduled to temporarily close I-91 North at Exit 6 from 9:00 P.M. Sunday to 5:00 A.M. Monday so crews can pave and paint the roadway.
Exit 9 on I-91 North will close at 9:00 P.M. Sunday and will remain closed through spring 2018. The following detours will be in place:
- For Route 20 West (towards West Springfield): Take Exit 10 for Main Street/Route 116. Take a sharp right onto Main Street/Route 116 and turn right onto Bradford Street. Continue onto Plainfield Street/Route 20.
- For Route 20A East: Take Exit 10 for Main Street/Route 116. Take a sharp right onto Main Street/Route 116 and turn left onto Carew Street/Route 20A East.
Traffic on I-91 South is not expected to shift to the newly reconstructed inner lanes until mid-December. MassDOT will be closing Exit 1A from 1-291 West to I-91 South overnight both Monday and Tuesday next week from 8:00 P.M. to 5:00 A.M. These temporary closures are so crews can pave the roadway in preparation for the traffic shift.
MassDOT is advising drivers to plan for additional time through these areas after changes take place.
