Merging drivers cause damage to I-91 South barricades

MassDOT said the dividers have been replaced three times

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – You may have noticed, as you enter Downtown Springfield, the white barricades on I-91 South, have taken a pretty bad beating. MassDOT told 22News, there have been several accidents, involving drivers hitting the dividers.

As drivers enter into downtown Springfield the lanes are reduced to one lane. MassDOT said, the dividers are an added safety feature that keeps drivers from merging from the I-291 off ramp into I-91 south merge lane, at the last minute.

Ralph Romano of MassDOT said “The very first night, literally five hours after we installed them, someone drove over them, but since then, it’s calmed down a lot.”

MassDOT said the dividers have been replaced three times, since being installed.

They also said, they placed an additional order with the manufacturer, so they could have extras, incase they’re hit again.
