Families evacuated during Springfield gas leak, portion of Liberty St. closed

The leak is located near 290 Liberty Street

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A section of Liberty Street has been shut down after a natural gas leak that happened around 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night.

Police cruisers were called in to block off the 300 Liberty Street area near Cass Street. Springfield Police Lt. Richard LaBelle told 22News police are expecting to be there until noon Friday.

Andrea Luppi of Columbia Gas told 22News a repair crew is on site, and they have located the leak near 290 Liberty Street. Families were forced to evacuate their homes but some have been given the OK to return.

Springfield Police Lt. Mark Rolland told 22News it is a low pressure gas leak, but it’s significant.

Rolland said high levels of natural gas were found in the street and extreme levels in some homes and a church in the area.
