President Kennedy remembered at ceremony in Holyoke

Tuesday is the 53rd Anniversary of Kennedy's assassination.

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – President John F. Kennedy was honored in a remembrance ceremony in Holyoke Tuesday night.

President Kennedy is the only U.S. President to be awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Tuesday is the 53rd Anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination.

Members of the western Massachusetts chapter of the order of the purple heart laid a wreath at the JFK Memorial in Holyoke.

“We need to remember this President. His famous quote… ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. He lived that before he said it,” said Commander of the Purple Heart Chapter 8 Brian Willette.

Kennedy towed another wounded sailor for miles on a makeshift raft after his PT Boat was destroyed in the South Pacific in World War II.
