Pet owners in West Springfield alerted for rabid raccoon

Pet owners are being asked to take extra precautions.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A raccoon in West Springfield tested positive rabies.

The raccoon may have had contact with a dog on Forris street last Thursday.

Pet owners in that neighborhood are being asked to take extra precautions.

Forris Street resident Joshua Larue told 22News he sees raccoons all the time.

“You got a couple of raccoons here every other night like rummaging through trash. It’s a thickly settled neighborhood so they are definitely not a rarity around here,” said Larue.

If you see an animal you suspect may be infected with rabies, you can contact the West Springfield Health Department at (413)-263-3206.
