Rock 102's Bax & O'Brien hoping to fill three trailers with food

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Rock 102’s annual Mayflower Marathon began Monday morning, benefiting the Open Pantry of Springfield.

The 52-hour broadcast marathon will last until Wednesday morning. Rock 102 hosts Bax & O’Brien will be broadcasting from the Basketball Hall of Fame while collecting non-perishable food donations for the Open Pantry.

This year, the goal is to fill three 48-foot trailers with non-perishable food donations. Those who wish to make a donation can bring food items to the Basketball Hall of Fame anytime before 10:00 a.m. Wednesday or donate online.

Among those making donations Monday, were students from Putnam high school’s Project Purple.

“We’re here just to help out. You know, we like to get involved with the community. It’s a really great opportunity for us to giveback,” said Putnam High School student David Bass Jr.

As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, the Mayflower Marathon has raised more than $21,000 and the first 48-foot trailer is nearly full. Last year’s drive raised a total of $125,000 and filled four of those trailers.

The Open Pantry is a nonprofit organization, based in Springfield. They operate an emergency food pantry, which has been providing groceries to people in need since 1975.

Guests of this year’s Mayflower Marathon include comedian Lisa Lampanelli, actress Maureen McCormick and Mike Scully from The Simpsons.
