Thanksgiving turkeys delivered to families in need throughout Springfield

All afternoon, the delivery trucks moved through the neighborhood

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Mason Square neighborhood resident Ernestine Johnson was thrilled to receive a Thanksgiving turkey from the Martin Luther King community center and the African-American fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha.

You could say it made her day. Johnson told 22News, “It feels wonderful. I’m really going to enjoy it. My family will enjoy it.”

The Martin Luther King community center was the staging area for delivery of dozens of turkeys throughout the neighborhood. Community center Executive Director Ronn Johnson told 22News this isn’t the first year that turkeys have been distributed to people who need this help. He said, “This partnership has been taking place for three to four years. The fraternity of Alpha Phi Alpha Springfield alumnae chapter has actually been doing this for 32 years now.”

All afternoon, the delivery trucks moved through the neighborhood. The team of volunteers gave Thanksgiving turkeys to dozens of deserving families.

Before that friendly knock on the door, some people were uncertain whether or not they would have a turkey on their thanksgiving dinner table.
