Holyoke Mayor Morse was sent a homophobic card

Mayor Morse said he's saved nearly every hateful card or message he's been sent

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Mayor of Holyoke received a hateful and homophobic card on Friday that was sent to his office.

Mayor Alex Morse decided to post a picture of the card and its message on his Facebook page, as a way to show the community that even dedicated city leaders are victims of hate and discrimination.

The message reads: “Alex, you are one of the most selfish people that I know due to your “gay” lifestyle. You are going down.” It’s unknown who wrote the letter.

Mayor Morse told 22News Friday night it’s hurtful to read, but not surprising. He said this hasn’t been the first time he’s been discriminated for his sexuality, but it doesn’t discourage him.

“I just wanted to make sure that the public was aware that this type of language is evident in all parts of our country,” said Mayor Morse. “It’s important we stick together and be role models for our children, and support one another.”

22News asked the mayor if he threw away the card, and he said no, he’s keeping it instead, and it’s still on his desk. He said he wants to save it and use it as motivation to work harder for Holyoke.

Mayor Morse said he’s saved nearly every hateful card or message he’s been sent for the same reason.
