SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – MGM has big plans for the City of Springfield, and they’re starting to unfold right before our eyes. 22News put on our hard hats Thursday, and got a look inside the maze of steel, girders, and beams.
MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis told 22News, crews have made a lot of progress over the past few months. “The garage is going up very quickly, we’re starting to erect our casino and laying down deck for the hotel. We’re starting to really make good progress, and entering this winter we think we’re really in a good position to hit our September of 2018 opening,” he said.
MGM Springfield met with the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority on Thursday to talk about opportunities the casino will bring to the city, including entertainment at the MassMutual Center.
David Gibbons, the Executive Director of the Convention Center Authority told 22News, they hope the new entertainment will set the bar higher than ever before. “They have a national, if not international network of selling. Our sales team here is very local, so they get a scale on that. I think today you saw where the bar’s going to be here in Springfield,” he said.
MGM Springfield said the parking garage will be the first building they complete. They expect that to be finished in late 2017, with the casino opening in 2018.
