Meals on Wheels providing a lifeline for local seniors

Highland Valley Elder Services provides meals for residents of 24 communities

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A celebration was held Thursday for the Meals on Wheels program, which each day delivers a nourishing meal to thousands of western Massachusetts senior citizens. Highland Valley Elder Services provides Meals on Wheels to 400 seniors in 24 Hampshire and Hampden County communities.

Eighty-four year-old Doris Childs lives at the Walter Salva Apartments in Northampton, where the Meals on Wheels are prepared. She told 22News that the volunteer delivering her a hot meal provides her with a lifeline.

“It helps a lot. You know, it’s reasonable, they do it on holidays, which is great because I’m alone, I’ve got a nephew, that’s all,” Childs said.

Highland Valley Elder Services has received support from a Subaru dealership. For every car the dealer leases or sells during the next two months, they donate $250 to charity; including Meals on Wheels America.
