WWII-era grenade discovered in woods of Springfield

Grenade detonated by Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad detonated a hand grenade that was found in a wooded area at the end of Chauncey Drive Wednesday afternoon.

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News that the old World War II-style pineapple hand grenade was discovered just after 12:30 P.M.

The grenade was detonated in the bomb squad’s secure container.
