What happens if you hit a deer with your vehicle?

If the deer flees, there's not much you can do. If it's injured, call the Environmental Police

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s not unusual to see deer on the side of the road. Sometimes they’ll jump into traffic and even get hit.

If this ever happens to you, the first thing to do is to stay calm. If you happen to hit a deer and it runs away, there’s not much you can do.

But if you a hit a deer and can’t run away, you should call the Environmental Police. If the deer dies in the crash, you are allowed you to take the dead deer with you.

According to Fisheries and Wildlife District Manager Ralph Taylor, “Massachusetts State Law allows the driver or passenger of the vehicle to claim the animal if they want the animal for meat.” From there, you can take it to a butcher so it can be turned into cuts of venison.

But it’s always best to keep an eye on the side of the road to avoid these kinds of collisions.
