AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – UMass Amherst campus police, and student and staff volunteers inspected the campus Wednesday night for safety problems.

The “Walk for Light” tour focused on areas with poor or broken lighting, overgrown trees or bushes, uneven steps, another safety issues.

Students told 22News some of the problematic areas they’ve seen on campus, including a bridge and popular cut-through behind buildings.

Sophia Nolasco, UMass Amherst, said, “I think it’d be good to have more lights back there because I know a lot of students use it as a shortcut, so it might make them feel safer at night.”

Lilly Keele, UMass Amherst said, “There’s a little bridge to get to the Morrill building, and the other night when I was going to a review session, it was pitch black.”

Reports were made and will be sent to appropriate departments for follow-up and repair.
